A legacy of betrayal

By JOHN FLEMING
Published August 10, 2006

Alvin Jenkins and Christian Maier are featured in Life, Love and Chaos, a new play by Robert J. Ammidown that opens Friday and runs through Aug. 27 at the Galaxy Center for the Arts, 8045 46th Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Based on incidents in the life of Ammidown, a Brandon resident, the play "explores the legacy passed down from generation to generation," a news release says. "In 1971, in Washington, the playwright's mother was raped and murdered in a scheme orchestrated by his father. Suddenly, at 11 years old, the boy found himself essentially orphaned with his mother dead and his father in prison for the crime. Since then, the playwright has questioned the nature of his relationship with his father and wondered even if such a relationship can exist given the circumstances." The cast includes Slake Counts, David Hershman, Mary Lee Ross, Susan Whatley and Steve Mountan, who also directs. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is "pay what you can." (727) 643-9504.
