  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Laurels of a photo laureate

By LENNIE BENNETT
Published August 10, 2006

When we last checked in with Rebecca Sexton-Larson, she was deep into creating a series of photographs as Tampa's 2005 Photo Laureate.

The series is complete and on view at the University of Tampa's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery, 310 N Blvd., Tampa, beginning Friday.

Sexton-Larson uses a pinhole camera, creating dreamy, evocative images and backgrounds to which she adds paint, lettering, sketches and ephemera, often handstitched to the paper. Most are large format. For the city of Tampa, she documented old landmarks and historical sites that are often overlooked, such as the cemetery statue shown here.

An opening reception Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. is free. The exhibition continues through Aug. 31. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Free admission. (813) 253-3333.
