Wood storks' absence is likely only temporary

Letters to the Editor

Subject: Wood Storks Abandon Busy Crossroads, (July 28)

As the environmental consultant who designed, permitted and built the wetlands at Bruce B. Downs and Cross Creek boulevards in 1989, rest assured the endangered wood storks are not gone. Surveys by Biological Research Associates and others showed that about 30 pairs of wood storks nested there successfully this year, despite a regional drought.

However, since the nesting season is finished, the adults and their offspring have dispersed widely throughout the southeastern United States, as they do each year. With a little luck, the wood storks will return to our Cross Creek wetlands mitigation site next spring.
