Marriage question to go before Ariz. voters

By TIMES WIRES
Published August 11, 2006

PHOENIX - A judge ruled Thursday that an initiative that would limit marriage to opposite-sex couples and restrict domestic partner benefits can go on the November ballot in Arizona.

Judge Douglas Rayes of Maricopa County Superior Court rejected arguments the initiative violated a constitutional requirement limiting proposed amendments to a single subject.

Opponents appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court, which is expected to decide the case within weeks.

The measure would define marriage as between a man and a woman and would prohibit state and local governments from providing marriage-like legal status to other relationships.

Supporters acknowledged that a second provision would eliminate domestic partner benefits provided by some local governments. Opponents say that provision should be a separate amendment because some voters would support one part but not the other.

Woman's body found in freezer; teen son arrested

BOUNTIFUL, Utah - Police in Montana arrested a Utah teenager suspected in the death of his mother whose body was found in her own freezer, police said Thursday.

Authorities arrested 18-year-old Jeremy Hauck for investigation of theft of his mother's car, which was found at a Missoula hotel, said Bountiful police Detective Randy Pickett.

Bountiful police will seek Hauck's extradition back to Utah, Pickett said. An arrest warrant for Hauck for investigation of first-degree murder was issued Thursday, Pickett said.

Police called by relatives to check on the family found the body of Laura Hauck, 52, in a chest-style freezer at her condominium.

Air Canada flight makes emergency landing

LINTHICUM, Md. - An Air Canada jet made an unscheduled landing in Baltimore on Thursday after an unclaimed package was reported on board.

The plane touched down on a remote runway about 4:10 p.m., officials said. Passengers were taken by bus to Washington.

Authorities searched the aircraft, but the search and an X-ray of the package revealed nothing dangerous, officials said.
