TAMPA - With USF's starting linebackers set for this season, defensive coordinator Wally Burnham is also confident he has found two ends after losing four linemen to graduation and transfer Frank Harry to homesickness.
Burnham said sophomore Josh Julmiste and redshirt freshman George Selvie will start at the ends, though he is concerned about the tackles.
"It's still early, so we don't really have any standouts yet,' Burnham said Saturday.
Burnham said candidates for tackles include senior Tavarious Robinson, who had 20 tackles and 11/2 sacks in 2005, and junior Allen Cray. Also in the mix is Florida transfer Julian Riley.
QBs NEED WORK: After practice, coach Jim Leavitt said the quarterback position is "inconsistent, but working hard." Leavitt also said senior Pat Julmiste and redshirt freshman Matt Grothe are "all even" in the starting-position race and both "need a lot of work."
THIS AND THAT: Matt Simms, brother of Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, committed to Louisville, according to insidetheville.com. Simms considered USF among his final choices. . . . Linebacker Josh Smiley broke his left foot and is out two to three weeks. ... Running back Walt Smith, who missed Friday's practice due to academics, was back for both practices.
UF: Safety net stretched
GAINESVILLE - After Reggie Nelson moved to cornerback from safety, the Gators might be getting help at safety again.
Freshman Jamar Hornsby has moved there from receiver, coach Urban Meyer said. Hornsby was ranked as high as the nation's No. 3 safety prospect by scout.com.
"He came to me, and we need some help at safety," Meyer said.
Meyer said Bryan Thomas is progressing after minor knee surgery and also should be able to help at the position this year.
NO CAPTAINS YET: Meyer has not named his captains, the first time in six years he has waited this long.
Fullback Billy Latsko said Meyer told him he'd be a captain. In the spring, Meyer said receiver Dallas Baker would be a senior captain in the fall.
INJURY NOTES: Freshman receiver Jarred Fayson out of Hillsborough High injured his left shoulder during kickoff drills. He's wearing a sling as a precautionary measure. Offensive linemen Ronnie Wilson, Eddie Haupt and Jim Barrie have been hampered by minor ankle injuries, Meyer said.
FSU: Defense stands out
TALLAHASSEE - FSU's de-fense created several turnovers in 11-on-11 scrimmaging as the Seminoles practiced in full pads for the first time.
Sophomore cornerback Tony Carter picked off freshman Christian Ponder. Freshman rover Myron Rolle deflected a pass by sophomore Xavier Lee to sophomore linebacker Derek Nicholson. Freshman Marcus Ball added the third off of quarterback Drew Weatherford, a sophomore who played for Land O'Lakes.
Junior linebacker Lawrence Timmons and senior defensive end Darrell Burston each had a sack.
SAY CHEESE: Media day and fan day is today. The first two-a-day practices start Monday.
