CLEARWATER - An 86-year-old Clearwater man died Monday afternoon in a car wreck at a busy intersection.

Police said Ernest Clinton Ash was driving a maroon Nissan when he collided with a white Cadillac driven by James Dematus, 24. The wreck occurred about 12:10 p.m. at Belcher Road and Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard.

Ash was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died a short time later, Clearwater police spokesman Wayne Shelor said.

Shelor said Monday afternoon that investigators "haven't figured out the specific mechanics of this wreck, so no charges have yet been filed."

Shelor said Dematus' injuries were not life-threatening.

Monday's wreck was the second fatal accident in slightly more than a month in that area.

On July 13, Clearwater resident Edith Odijk, 61, was driving north on Belcher, just south of Gulf-to-Bay, when she ran into the car of Roderick Wood, 92, and his wife, Effie, 87, who were leaving Gulf-to-Bay Plaza.

The Woods' Ford Taurus careened across the road and into the retention pond next to Lakeside Mobile Home Park. Despite rescue attempts, the elderly couple drowned. Odijk was cited for running a red light.
