CLEARWATER - A 29-year-man was found dead in a pond off U.S. 19 Sunday evening but police said they did not suspect foul play.

Victor B. Mace was pronounced dead by Clearwater Fire Department paramedics who pulled him out of the pond in the 21300 block of U.S. 19 about 8 p.m., said Clearwater police spokesman Wayne Shelor.

Patrol officers and a detective who responded to the scene did not notice obvious signs of violence or criminal conduct, Shelor said. Their working hypothesis is that it was an accidental death.

An autopsy had been done by Monday but the cause of death was still pending, said Bill Pellan, director of investigations for the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office.

Shelor said Mace lived at a nearby apartment complex in the 2600 block of Drew Street. His relatives could not be reached for comment Monday.
