Price of gas dips locally, nationally

The nationwide average price of self-serve regular gasoline fell below $3 per gallon Tuesday after nearing the previous all-time record high of $3.057 set on Labor Day 2005, AAA's daily, on-line Fuel Gauge Report shows. The drop in price to $2.997 per gallon is contrary to widespread projections last week that fuel prices would reach new record highs, AAA said. According to the site, the average price of regular unleaded in the Tampa Bay area was $2.945, while in Florida the average was $2.995.

Cox teams up with Google in coupon deal

Largo-based Cox Target Media has struck a deal with Google to post electronic coupons for Valpak advertisers printed on Google Map searches for local merchants such as restaurants, dry cleaners and car washes. No money is changing hands. The deal is aimed at enhancing the direct mailer's exposure while luring small-business advertisers to Google rather than established rivals Yahoo and Citysearch. It's the latest in a string of Google deals with other media companies to beef up its ad revenues from $6-billion to $10-billion this year. Google also plans to sell its own version of electronic coupons to its paid-search advertisers.

HSN's Diller buys into Collegehumor.com

Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp, the parent company of St. Petersburg's Home Shopping Network, has acquired controlling interest in Connected Ventures LLC, creators of Collegehumor.com. The price was not disclosed. The New York-based Web site, which attracts 6-million unique visitors and 200-million page views a month, targets a college-age audience with games, videos and articles. Co-founders Josh Abramson and Ricky Van Veen, who recently released a book and are developing a film for Paramount Pictures, will continue to operate the venture.

Business insurance assistance rule passes

The Florida Cabinet on Tuesday approved an emergency rule establishing a commercial property joint underwriting plan. Effective for 90 days, the plan is designed to help ease the commercial property insurance crisis, most likely by providing reinsurance to insurance companies rather than directly writing policies.
