Affordable homes in spotlight Thursday

Mortgage-ready buyers can find out about new and existing homes for sale.

ST. PETERSBURG - Call it Homebuying 101.

Neighborhood Housing Services will host a "seller-buyer linkup" from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the NHS office, 1600 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S.

Part of the NHS open house series, the event will provide an opportunity for mortgage-ready home buyers to meet with NHS partners and see new and existing affordable homes for sale.

The free event is open to all. For information, call (727) 821-6897, ext. 101.

NHS has been tailoring its approach to address home buyers' and homeowners' needs in light of what agency officials call the "perfect storm" of costly real estate, rising property tax and insurance rates, condo conversions and mobile home park buyouts - all combining to create a housing affordability crisis.

But home ownership remains achievable, NHS officials say.

They offer prospective owners advice on finding a home and take them through financing, the purchase itself, rehabilitation, insurance and home maintenance.

Customers include renters and first-time home buyers, in addition to homeowners who need financing for housing renovation and repairs. Many are single parents.
