Music in the Park celebrates 10 years

SEMINOLE - This year marks the 10th anniversary of Seminole's Music in the Park series, the free outdoor concert event that has grown in popularity and attendance over the past decade.

The 2006 concert series, which runs six consecutive Friday evenings, starts with country music performer Wiley Fox at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road.

The series will offer performances that range in genres from Latin rock to big band and swing music, to oldies and rock 'n' roll.

Twenty-five sponsors have contributed to the concert series this year, including businesses operating in Seminole and surrounding communities.

"Most of the sponsors have been supportive of the event for many years, helping out with financial contributions, advertising assistance and donations of in-kind services," said Steve Malla, Seminole's special events program coordinator.

Malla said the series started out as a four-week event and was expanded to six weeks to meet demand about five years ago.

"We try to wrap it up at least two weeks before Halloween to make room for a rain date" before Halloween events, Malla said.

Malla said once the series gets rolling every fall, word of mouth increases attendance each week. Average attendance runs from 1,000 to 1,500 people.

"The final night of the series may draw as many as 2,000 people because the Diamonds a classic oldies group have a national following."
