USF gets a leg up on bid for excellence

The University of South Florida may be gaining a home-field advantage on the board that will recommend which state universities get designated as centers of excellence. Six of the 11 members of the Florida Technology, Research, and Scholarship Board, which works under the Board of Governors of the State University System, come from the Tampa Bay region. And the two leading candidates for governor call the area home. The area members are Ann W. Duncan, principal of Vertical Integration in Tampa; George Gordon, chief executive of Enporion in Tampa and president of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum; Stephen Mason, president and CEO of BayCare Health System; Brian McDonald, a consultant with the BRM Group in Oldsmar; Dr. James Mule of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa; and Dr. Donald C. Sullivan of Tampa. The board will assess applications and recommend to the governor this fall which universities will win the designation, which means extra money from the state. The University of Florida, University of Central Florida and Florida Atlantic University have centers of excellence. The region's presence on the board, though, does not make it a slam dunk for USF, says Gordon, who was nominated by USF president Judy Genshaft. Gordon said he hopes his work on the board makes a difference throughout the state, adding that "the proposals will have to be evaluated on their own merit."
