Band members aren't there just to pump up fans. They work hard at their craft and perform for the love of music.

Think what you may, but it's not just about the Hey Song.
Sure, the school band is there to support its team, rev up the fans and give them something to watch during halftime.
But loads of practice goes into pulling together that 15-minute show that usually comes with a special theme and, sometimes, some very cool visual effects.
Just like those well-lauded football players, the marching band has its own summer camp at which numerous hours and buckets of sweat are spent getting the show on the field.
When football season is over, the kids are still plugging away at winter concert shows, all-county and all-state auditions, solo ensemble and concert band evaluations.
While mastering their instruments, many of these young musicians learn to become excellent time managers, balancing academics, part-time jobs and other extracurricular activities with after-school practices.
So the next time you're at the game, think about staying in your seat instead of heading to those crowded concession stands.
Maybe even check out the halftime shows sans the game at the District 5 marching evaluations Nov. 4 at River Ridge Middle/High School.
Whether you're there or at the game, go ahead and put your hands together and give them their due.
