'A' schools earn prizes from mayor

By Times Staff Writer

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker honored 18 city schools Tuesday night for maintaining an A grade or improving their letter grade from last year. Dubbed the city's "Top Apples," principals and assistant principals from the schools received ice cream from Ben & Jerry's, dinner for two at the Columbia Restaurant, tickets for two to an American Stage production and a weekend for two at the TradeWinds Island Resorts. They also received cash bonuses totaling $67,000 provided by anonymous donors. Principals received $2,500 bonuses and assistant principals $1,000. That's a lot of apples.
