Art is in the air

By Times Staff Writer

Keep an eye on the sky over downtown Tampa next week to catch a glimpse of a "painting" by artist Vik Muniz, whose work is on display at the USF Contemporary Art Museum through Oct. 7.

Muniz uses everyday objects, usually with a relationship to the subject, to re-create faces or scenes made by other photographers and artists: Elizabeth Taylor's image in diamonds, for example, or a Civil War soldier in toy soldiers. He then photographs them and destroys his "original."

Over Tampa, he will work with a pilot to create Clouds, Clouds, a work similar to the one shown here over the Manhattan skyline.

The flight is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 31 or Sept. 1, depending on the weather.

The art museum is on the USF Tampa campus, 4202 E Fowler Ave., (813) 974-2849. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free, but a $3 parking permit is required weekdays.
