In addition to fine arts museums, we have many others with different missions. A few of them often have arts-related exhibitions. Here are three, with some of their offerings in the coming year.

Florida International Museum

"Jeweled Objects of Desire: From the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History," through Sept. 30

Rare gems and precious metals including an extravagant collection by jeweler Sidney Mobell.

"From the Vaults of the Florida Smithsonian Affiliates," through Sept. 30

Paintings, decorative arts, fossils, early Florida objects and folk art.

"Marvelous, Magnificent Martele," Oct. 12 through Jan. 7

From the New Orleans Museum of Art, a collection of 400 Martele silver objects handcrafted from 1880 to 1930 by Gorham Silver Co.

Wall hangings and paintings about the Holocaust and art work from Malkin's diary while searching for Adolf Eichmann.

 

Henry B. Plant Museum at the University of Tampa

"Trivial Pursuits of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair," through Dec. 31

Fliers, souvenirs and keepsakes from this famous fair, the voices of famous visitors such as Frederick Douglass and Helen Keller, and Thomas Edison's footage of Little Egypt's "scandalous" peep show.

"Goodbye Victoria, Hello Flappers," March through October 2007

Decorative objects illustrating the transition from the late Victorian era to the Roaring '20s, a period when the Tampa Bay Hotel, now the site of the museum, flourished.

A SEASON FOR ART

Just about any weekend, you can find an art festival in Florida. Or four. We can't list them all but here is a group of some of the oldest and best. There are lots of good festivals run by professionals, but these are organized primarily by volunteers and are not for profit.

Nov. 4-5: Art Harvest, Dunedin

Jan. 27-29: Art Festival Beth-El, St. Petersburg

Feb. 17-19: Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Miami

March 3-4: Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, Tampa

March 16-18: Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival

April 21-22: Mainsail Arts Festival, St. Petersburg

Cedar Key Spring Art Celebration, Cedar Key
