Tampa men finish high in local Open

Published August 25, 2006

Randy Weiss, Irmo, S.C., settled in on a 7-1 match-play record and won Liberty Lane's second annual Miller Lite St. Petersburg Open, part of the Professional Bowlers Association's South Regional Tour. His play earned him the grand first prize of $2,500.

Don Yoshihara of Tampa finished as high local, going 5-3 in match play with a 4,331 total pin fall for fourth place and $1,000 prize money. Also from Tampa, Tom Daugherty won $700 in 10th place and Peter Dohan Jr. won the same money in 14th. All three are Regional PBA members. Richard Langton of Seminole (2,540/13 games) and senior Patsy DellaPenna of Palm Harbor (2,526/13 games) finished in the top 35.

Of those who competed but are not touring members, Bob Smolka of Pinellas Park finished 18th, just two posts short of qualifying for match-play. Smolka won $400 with a total pin fall of 2,623 in 13 games.

PBA: Kelly Kulick, who in June became the first woman to earn a full-season exemption on the PBA Tour, became just the second woman to win a PBA Regional Tour title, taking the PBA East Region King Pin Lanes Open Sunday. Kulick defeated fellow exempt bowler Tommy Delutz Jr. 20-19 in a two-ball roll-off after the two tied at 221 after 12 frames in the one-game title match. King Pin Lanes also was the site of Liz Johnson's first career PBA Regional Tour title last season, which made her the first woman in PBA history to win a singles title of any kind.

NABI: Club 570 will be at Countryside on Sunday for the National Amateur Bowlers Inc. Tour, featuring a $210 jackpot and a strike-pot up to $183. Squad times are 11 a.m. and 12:30. Call (863) 667-4779 or visit
