Times correspondent Derek LaRiviere sat down with the senior, who also starts at middle linebacker, to talk about expectations for this season and the extra load he carries this season.
Times: Do you feel a lot of pressure now that last year’s starting tailback, Ryan Walczak, is gone?
Drummond: I feel it a little. We run a system here where the running back is asked to do a lot. With no real experience at tailback, I know I am going to get a lot more rushes from my position. I just need to make sure that I am always driving my feet and moving forward, and everything else will work itself out.
Times: The team comes off of its first winning season, so what is the mind-set going into 2006?
Drummond: I think we all pretty much feel like we can be just as good this season. We had some freshmen on the squad last season that now have some experience, and (quarterback) Steve (Johnson) and I are very motivated because this is our last shot at playing high school ball.
Times: Speaking of Johnson, with you two being the two team leaders, how is your relationship with him on and off the field?
Drummond: I am basically the quarterback of the defense from the middle linebacker spot and Steve is the offensive guy, so we co-exist out there very well. Off the field, I have known him since we were in elementary school together. We played Hernando Youth League football and baseball together, too.
Times: Would you rather play linebacker or running back?
Drummond: I definitely enjoy playing linebacker more. I have more of a leadership role out there, and I am really maturing at that position. I really love reading plays and shifting the defense before it all begins. I like fullback too though, don’t get me wrong. There’s something exciting about taking on linebackers and linemen one-on-one as you bust through the line.
