Davis scoffs at high price of Orlando's Burnham deal

By ROBERT TRIGAUX
Published August 28, 2006

Orlando wasted no time crowing last week over landing a site for California's Burnham Institute for Medical Research. The arrival of Burnham, local leaders told the Orlando Sentinel, "will earn a spot in the history books right next to Walt Disney's transformation of Central Florida."

Nonprofit Burnham seeks to cure diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. It was an impressive runnerup win for Orlando, which lost out to Palm Beach County a few years ago in attracting the prestigious Scripps Research Institute. It's all part of a Florida biotech build-up heavily subsidized by state incentives.

One observer is less than im-pressed. Congressman Jim Davis, a Democratic candidate in the race for Florida governor, made an offhand mention about the Burnham deal in Wednesday's debate with state Sen. Rod Smith. The $300-million-plus package of state and local incentives works out to about $1-million per new job. Said Davis: "We can't afford that going forward."
