Talk of the Bay

Here's a list that Dilbert would love

Time and again, corporate America and the media members who track it resort to cliches that, at the end of the day, show an inability to think outside the box.

Cliches are rife in the business world, and recent research by Factiva uncovered the worst offenders. The New York company handpicked 55 overused phrases and tallied how many times each appeared in 1,447 U.S. business and news publications during the first half of 2006.

"Think outside the box" (856 mentions) and "Low-hanging fruit" (675) ranked reassuringly low on the list. The top five:

"At the end of the day" (12,460 mentions)

"In the black" (4,876)

"In the red" (4,628)

"Level playing field" (2,957)

"Time and again" (2,764)
