Young Landsharks return with awards

Published August 30, 2006

SEMINOLE - Eight members of Seminole Recreation's Landshark triathlon team traveled to Land O'Lakes Aug. 5 to participate in the USA Triathlon Florida Youth Triathlon Championships.

All eight finished in the top five of their respective age groups, said their coach, Jim Sheets, Seminole's recreation director.

Hannah Palm earned the top spot in the Girls 11-12 division and an invitation to compete in the National Youth Triathlon Championship in Wisconsin on Aug 26.

Steven Rusnak won the top spot in the Boys 13-15 division and an invitation to the National Championship in Wisconsin. Nick Mastromarino finished third in that division.

The triathletes have been training with coaches Sheets and Chris Bornfleth also an employee of Seminole's recreation department this summer in preparation for the Youth Triathlon Championships.

The 2006 team has participated in the Meek & Mighty Triathlon, Mad Beach Triathlon, Tri If You Dare Fit Kids Triathlon and the Tri-Fever Florida Regional Championship Triathlon.

"Even though triathlon is an individual sport, it requires a team effort to train and practice along with the support system from fellow teammates and parents. The Seminole Landsharks have built a team unity that is special and would make any coach proud to say they are part of such a group," said Sheets in a release announcing the results of the competition.
