BRIEFLY No-kill animal shelter needs helpers, donations BROOKSVILLE - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Hernando County is in need of volunteers and donations. The SPCA is a no-kill shelter at 9075 Grant St., west of Brooksville (Sunshine Grove Road to Taylor Road to Grant). It is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays (closed on holidays and Sundays). All donations benefit the dogs and cats at the shelter. There are many pets available for adoption. Adoption fees vary, and include rabies shot, heartworm testing, worming and spaying or neutering. Fees for cats also include testing for feline leukemia and AIDS. Aim machine gun for cars and fire away at event BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Sportsman's Club will host a machine gun shoot at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the club range off U.S. 19 in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, about 9½ miles north of State Road 50. Five cars will be destroyed, along with an assortment of other targets. Food will be available throughout the day. Admission is $2 for adults, with children 12 and younger admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Shooters with their own guns cay pay $20 to participate. Vendor spaces are available for $20. Sample nature's menu, see bats and butterflies BROOKSVILLE - Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following programs and events in September: - Incredible Edibles, 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12. Participants should bring their own place settings to sample wild plants and game. - Florida Bats, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 20. The program will be presented by Cyndi Marks of the Florida Bat Center, and will include live bats. - Butterfly Workshop, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 30. Put in your 2 cents about roads, how to pay for them A public hearing on road improvement funding through Florida's 2005 Growth Management Law will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Powel Crosley Museum, 8374 N Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) in Sarasota. The hearing will be conducted by the Chairs Coordinating Committee. The hearing will address transportation funding for Florida's west central region, which includes Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties. Those unable to attend the hearing can get a copy of the priority list through the Web site at www.regionaltransportation.org. Public comment can be submitted through the Web site. As an official transportation planning agency for Florida's west central region, the Chairs Coordinating Committee is composed of elected officials and representatives of transportation planning agencies, including metropolitan planning organizations and districts 1 and 7 of the Florida Department of Transportation. Vendors, bring your stuff to Market on Main Street BROOKSVILLE - Vendor spaces are available for the next Market on Main Street, which will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 16 in downtown Brooksville. The market will be along Main Street, between Broad and Liberty streets, and in the city parking lot next to 31 S Main St. Participating vendors can sell produce, plants, antiques, collectibles, handmade crafts, woodwork, vintage jewelry, candles, baskets, quilts and miscellaneous items. VFW Post 8713, auxiliary plan variety of events BROOKSVILLE - VFW Post 8713 and Ladies Auxiliary will host the following events: - Labor Day at the Horse Races, 1 p.m. Monday. The auxiliary will have a bake auction to benefit cancer aid and research. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available. The Country Pride Band will perform from 2 to 5 p.m. - Monthly breakfast, 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 10. The menu will include scrambled eggs, toast or biscuit, sausage or bacon, and grits, potatoes or sausage gravy and biscuit. Coffee and orange juice is included. The cost is $3. Annual golf tournament needs golfers, sponsors BROOKSVILLE - Golfers and sponsors are needed for the Building Officials Association of Florida Nature Coast Chapter's annual golf tournament Sept. 23 at Hernando Oaks Golf and Country Club, 5230 Delacroix Drive, off Broad St. Today is the sponsorship deadline and Friday is the deadline for golfers to enter the tournament. Hole sponsorships are $60 for one hole or $350 for two holes and a team entry (four golfers) to the tournament. The cost to enter the tournament is $70 per player, which includes a continental breakfast, golf and lunch. A shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams and prizes will be given for the longest drives at holes 3, 7, 11 and 16, and closest to the pin at holes 4 and 15.
