High series now claimed by two

SPRING HILL - When Jay Olsen obliterated Kevin Williams' county record for high series in 2002, many thought it would be a record that would go untouched for many years.

Williams' mark had held up for eight seasons, and Olsen topped it by 19 pins when he tossed his 855. Now Olsen will have to push over atop the Hernando County bowling mountain. Joe Correa, with his first 800 series, just jumped up there with him.

Correa tossed an 855 last Wednesday night at Spring Hill Lanes during the Scratch Trio League. With pin totals of 267, 300 and 288, Correa found himself in position to overtake Olsen in the 10th frame. He wound up sparing and tying his fellow record holder.

"This is the most exciting thing to ever happen to me in bowling," said Correa, immediately after the final game. "I felt like I had a shot at this from the first game - sometimes you just know."

When Olsen knocked out Williams' 836, he was competing on the lane next to the record holder. Williams was the first person to congratulate Olsen.

Wednesday, Olsen was competing on the lane next to Correa. The finish was bittersweet for Olsen.

"It's a weird feeling," Olsen said. "You want to see him do it because it's such an awesome achievement, but no one wants to get beat. I really thought this record would stand alone for a long time."

Because of the long-standing tradition the sport has in this county, the high series record is the most sought after. Until someone knocks off this mark, both Correa and Olsen will be revered by bowlers throughout the county.
