PLANT CITY - A 44-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on charges he stole copper wire from two Tampa Electric Co. substations, causing an outage in eastern Hillsborough County. On Sunday about noon, William Carl Hunter, 44, removed copper ground wire from a substation at 940 Old Hopewell Road, deputies say. The next day about 4 a.m., he went to another substation 550 yards from the first, according to investigators. There, he cut a fence and attempted to remove ground wire again, this time causing an outage for eastern Hillsborough customers. Total estimated damage to both facilities came to $57,900, investigators say. Detectives received information about the suspect from Critical Intervention Services, a security firm for Tampa Electric Co. Hunter attempted to flee deputies when they arrived at 1311 Jim Johnson Loop on Wednesday to arrest him. Hunter jumped through a glass window, injuring himself. After being taken into custody, he was treated at South Florida Baptist Hospital for minor injuries. Hunter, who listed his address as 2422 Welcome Road in Lithia on arrest records, is charged with grand theft, criminal mischief, breaking and injuring a fence and resisting arrest without violence. He was being held at a Hillsborough County jail with bail set at $5,500.
