The end of 'Menopause'

By Times Staff Writer
Published August 31, 2006

In her review of Menopause the Musical three months ago, St. Petersburg Times writer Barbara L. Fredricksen wrote, "You'd think that a one-joke show would go stale after the first few minutes. That doesn't happen. . . . Menopause the Musical is a 95-minute hoot, with slick production values and a stellar cast."

Lots of people apparently agreed. The show, which opened May 19, has been extended twice and has sold almost 35,000 tickets. The storyline revolves around four menopausal women on a shopping trip through New York City's Bloomingdale's, singing popular '60s and '70s tunes with a twist: Heat Wave becomes Hot Flash; My Guy becomes My Thighs; and we won't get into what Good Vibrations becomes.

Menopause is closing Sept. 10 and is expected to gross $1.25-million, making it the most successful production ever in the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's 292-seat Jaeb Theater.

The schedule for the remaining 11 days in the run: 7 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The center is at 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $38.50. (813) 229-7827 or www.tbpac.org.
