Two men smash display case at mall, make off with jewelry

TAMPA - Two men smashed a glass display at a jewelry kiosk in University Mall on Thursday night, stole jewelry and got away in a light-colored American car, deputies said.

Detectives were searching for two men they said walked up to the Gold Valley kiosk at 8:23 p.m. armed with pistols. After breaking the display case, they stuffed the stolen goods into a blue duffle bag, deputies said.

The owner of the kiosk chased the two men through the mall. But the men outran him and were last seen in a car going west on Fowler Avenue.

The robbers are described as black, both about 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-6, weighing 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

One had a short mustache or goatee and was wearing a Jamaican beaded necklace, black T-shirt and dark pants, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. The other, who was said to be driving the getaway car, was of medium build, had a bushy Afro hairstyle and may have had a hat pulled over his hair.

The car was described as a 2000 to 2006 model light blue or gray car without any visible tag.

Neither of the two people working at the kiosk was injured, Carter said.

Detectives think one of the robbers may have also been involved in an earlier burglary Thursday night at a flea market on Nebraska Avenue, which was being investigated by Tampa police.

Anyone with information should call the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-873-8477.
