TOWN 'N COUNTRY - As it kicks off its new growing season the nearly half-century-old Town 'N Country Garden Circle is looking for some young sprouts, or at the very least some new sprouts. "All folks interested in gardening are welcome," said president Fran Gamester. "If you're a novice come join us to learn and if you're an expert come join us to share your knowledge." The garden circle, which meets the first Wednesday of the month from September to May, holds its first meeting of the season Wednesday at noon. Meetings are held at the Town 'N Country Recreation Center on Hanley Road next to Webb Middle School. "Our first program is on Florida perennials with master gardener Pat O'Shea," said Gamester of a season that promises information on everything from hummingbirds to water gardens. "We have almost every meeting planned through the master gardener extension program." Gamester said the club has about 30 members and there seldom is a meeting in which less than 15 attend. "Ours is one of the few circles who have male members, but they're just as interested as the women," said Gamester, who says she learned "everything I know" from husband Rob. In addition to learning new and better ways to garden, the group also takes on service projects. These endeavors include landscaping the entrance to Bellamy Elementary School, the science atrium at Leto High and the entrance to Jackson Springs park and gym. The club also maintains the atrium at West Gate Regional Library; helped plant nearly 300 crape myrtle, live oak and pine trees along the Town 'N Country Greenway; and is landscaping the medians along Northbridge Boulevard and Riverwood Drive. Annual dues are $35. Members can join at any time during the year. Jackie Ripley can be reached at ripley@sptimes.com or 813 269-5308.
