Community fundraiser to help a helper Francina Brown, 52, has been raising 11 grandchildren and other relatives since her daughter's slaying in July. Now it seems a community wants to adopt her. The national honor recognizes distinguished social science books depicting ethnicity in the United States. Barbara Cruz, a professor of social science education, won this time for Cesar Chavez: A Voice for Farmworkers. She won in 2002 for her book on cultural identity among teens of multiple ethnicities. The award, given by the National Council for the Social Studies, is named for an African-American historian and educator who wrote books for adults and young people. Beck, who is under scrutiny for his role in the dismissal of one law firm and the selection of another, is charging $100 for his class. The course title: "Engineering Laws, Rules and Ethics."
