More than 40 movies set for Gasparilla Film Festival

YBOR CITY - In a new addition to the Gasparilla lineup, an independent film festival will bring five days of screenings to Tampa Feb. 28 through March 4.

The Gasparilla Film Festival will show more than 40 Cuban, comedy, horror, family, and short films at various venues, including the Tampa Theatre and Channelside Cinemas.

Festival planners also have lined up some unorthodox screenings, including an outdoor show of family shorts at Cotanchobee/Fort Brooke Park and, possibly, a horror film in an old cigar factory.

Stageworks founder wins Artist of the Year Award

DOWNTOWN - Anna Brennen, founder and artistic director of Stageworks Theater Company, was awarded the 2006 Mayor's Artist of the Year Award last week during the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce's 2006 Cultural Affairs Lunch.

The annual award honors an artist who has left a mark on the Tampa community.

Stageworks Theater has operated for more than 22 years, performing classic and contemporary plays.

Brennen has overseen more than 100 main stage and touring shows as a producer and director. She is a veteran of the New York stage and a past recipient of a Florida Arts Council Playwriting Fellowship. She is the third artist to win the mayor's award.

 

Fitness class features mix of international music

NORTH TAMPA - The Tampa Jewish Community Center is offering a new fitness class from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays.

Zumba combines the rhythms of hip-hop, salsa, meringue, reggaeton and samba.

Classes are $4 for JCC members, $6 for nonmembers. A Zumba pass, good for five classes, is available for $16 for members, $24 for nonmembers.

All classes will be held at the Tampa JCC, 13009 Community Campus Drive. Call 264-9000.

 

Red Cross chapter needs registered nurse volunteers

SOUTHERN PINES - The Tampa Bay chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for registered nurses to work as volunteers in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital, 2901 W Swann Ave.
