FAU at a glance

WHERE: Boca Raton.

COACH: Howard Schnellenberger (28-30, sixth season; 128-107-3 in 21 seasons overall).

LAST SEASON: 2-9, 2-5 in Sun Belt (tied for seventh).

LOCAL TIES: WR Chris Bonner (Gaither), DB Kyle Califar (Sickles), K Keegan Peterson (Riverview), K Nick Lomartire (Chamberlain), RB William Rose (Gaither), OL Nello Faulk (Robinson), TE Ed Wertepny (Sickles), DL Ryan Sollazzo (Armwood), WR Conshario Johnson (Middleton), TE Jason Harmon (Riverview), DT Patrick Fatu (Robinson), LB Malik Eugene (Freedom), LB C.J. Lee (St. Petersburg Catholic).

STADIUM: Lockhart Stadium (20,500).

OUTLOOK: The most notable item might be FAU's schedule. The Owls play five road games until coming home to face Southern Utah on Oct. 12. That could be a tough stretch without a proven leader at quarterback. The battle for the starting job is between Sean Clayton, Rusty Smith and McKinson Souverain following the loss of Danny Embrick (1,531 yards and 11 touchdowns). The receivers also have limited experience with sophomore Casey McGhee (269 yards, one touchdown) as the frontrunner to become the go-to guy. A young Owls defense will do its best to compete in its second season in the Sun Belt. Shomari Earls (87 tackles) is gone, but safety Kris Bartels (82 tackles) and linebacker Cergile Sincere (70 tackles) should firm up the defense.
