DADE CITY - The band director at Pasco Middle School was arrested Friday after he admitted having sex with a female student, the Dade City Police Department reported. Michael A. Black, 26, told a detective that he had been having a sexual relationship with the student for "the past couple months." Black said he had sex with the girl 10 times, the latest being Friday morning in the school's band room, police said. Police are not releasing the girl's name or age. She is under 16 years old, according to the charge filed against Black. The girl's parents contacted the school resource officer at Pasco Middle School on Friday and said they were concerned about the number of times their daughter was getting calls from a male teacher. When a Dade City police detective interviewed the girl, she said she and Black had been having sex for the past four months. Black, a Lakeland resident, faces a charge of lewd and lascivious battery on a person under 16 years old. Police said he was being transported Friday evening to the Land O'Lakes jail. Pasco County schools suspended Black with pay early Friday, and he resigned later in the afternoon, said Tammy Rabon, the district's director of communications. The district plans to refer the case Tuesday to the Florida Department of Education's Bureau of Professional Practices Services, which reviews ethics and criminal complaints. "If what has been reported is correct, it is clearly a breach of ethics," Rabon said. "And unacceptable." Black's wife, Tiffany, 27, said the couple is in the process of getting a divorce. She lives in Michigan with their two young children, ages 2½ and 1 year old. "I had no idea. I am, like, floored and shocked right now," Tiffany Black said Friday night. "I had no idea." Times researcher Carolyn Edds contributed to this report. Mary Spicuzza covers education in Pasco County. She can be reached at 813 909-4614 or toll-free at 1-800-333-7505, ext. 4614.
