Morocco arrests 56 in terror plot

RABAT, Morocco - Security agents broke up a group planning terrorist attacks on tourist sites and government facilities, arresting 56 people who included soldiers and the wives of two pilots at the state airline, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

The sweep was the latest by Morocco's government in an anti-terror campaign that began after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States and intensified after 2003 suicide bombings that killed 45 people in Casablanca and stunned the predominantly moderate Muslim nation.

Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa said in a statement, "The members of this group were planning terrorist attacks targeting tourist sites, strategic government facilities and foreign holdings, and assassinations of prominent figures for political or moral reasons."

Egyptian police seek five al-Qaida suspects

EL-ARISH, Egypt - Police are searching for five alleged al-Qaida members who are believed to be hiding in the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula and to be plotting terror attacks, a senior security official said Friday.

It was the first time Egyptian officials have spoken of a possible al-Qaida presence in the Sinai, where militants have carried out bomb attacks against tourist resorts since October 2004, killing 124 people.

The southern part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has been on high security alert since Wednesday after Israel warned its citizens of imminent terror attacks. Hundreds of Israeli tourists started leaving the Sinai through the Taba border crossing.
