Talk of the Bay

And you just thought beer tasted good

By HELEN HUNTLEY
Published September 4, 2006

If you down a cold beer today at a Labor Day cookout, don't forget to toast the hard-working folks who made it all possible.

Here are a few numbers you can use to impress your suds-loving friends: The beer industry says it has 106 brewing and packaging establishments and 53 wholesalers in Florida. Together they employ more than 6,000 people. The industry also takes credit for 45,159 jobs at 36,946 retailers from pubs to grocery stores. Add them together and you get $1.1-billion a year in wages.

Those numbers come from a study sponsored by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and Beer Institute. Counting suppliers and the old "ripple effect" through the economy, the study declares beer creates 100,321 jobs in Florida, providing $2.8-billion in wages.
