Talk of the Bay

It might not be Channelside for long

Look for owners of Channelside - the entertain-ment and retail center, not the condo-happy neigh-borhood next to downtown Tampa - to tweak the name soon.

Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. of New York has hired a local company, Performix Marketing, to "rebrand" the center with a different name that will likely include "Channelside" in it.

For years, the center, the Florida Aquarium and port cruise ship terminal were the only major features of the area. But the condo boom has raised the neighborhood's profile and led people to call it Channelside (technically, it's the Channel District).

That's diluted the brand for the center, home to restaurants (Hooters, Stumps Supper Club, Margarita Mama's), bars (Howl at the Moon, Banana Joe's Island Party) and specialty retail shops, says Performix president Jonathan Cordeau.

Also, various names have been attached to the place. It was originally the Shoppes at Channelside. The corporate name is Channelside Bay Mall. A photo on Ashkenazy's Web site calls it River Center Mall.
