Lawyer's backing of movie leads to plans for another

Independent film company Strata Productions of Illinois came to Pinellas County a year ago seeking legal investors in its movie, Heavens Fall.

Strata didn't receive a warm reception.

The film stars Timothy Hutton and tells the story of the Scottsboro Nine in Alabama, a group of young black men falsely accused of gang-raping two white women in 1931.

With a strong legal angle in the story, producers figured lawyers might want a piece of the action. Locally, only Largo lawyer John Trevena dropped $15,000 on it, though producers say lawyers from around the nation chipped in.

Producer Ben Gonzales said the movie is cut and Strata is seeking a distributor. No release date is scheduled. But Trevena may yet see a return on his investment.

Now, Trevena said he and Gonzales have formed a production company to make a movie about a Tampa story to be filmed partly in the city.

Trevena is mum on the details. Stay tuned.
