Tally your miles and save on insurance

By TOM ZUCCO

If you're willing to report the exact number of miles you drive every six months, Progressive Direct is willing to cut you a break on your auto insurance.

It's no secret that people who drive fewer miles have fewer accidents. But normally, auto insurers ask drivers to estimate the number of miles they drive each year.

Under a pilot program started last week in Florida, Progressive customers who volunteer for the program log their odometer readings into a Web site and get an automatic 5 percent discount. Customers can then get additional discounts ranging from 3 percent (fewer than 10,000 but more than 8,999 miles per year) to 10 percent (fewer than 3,000 miles per year).

Whether the program saves customers money remains to be seen because auto rates are based on a variety of factors, including age of the driver, type of vehicle and a person's driving record.
