Thrill of the open road for rent

By MARK ALBRIGHT
Published September 4, 2006

Ah, the freedom of the open road: the wind in your hair, the power of that 1,450 cc engine between your legs, the bugs in your teeth.

That's the getaway promised by EagleRider, the Hertz of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle rental world that just opened its 41st location worldwide in Madeira Beach.

Some Harley dealers rent bikes, but EagleRider markets experiences more like a travel seller through toll-free central reservation centers, travel agents and the big travel Web sites. Packages include hotel deals for self-drive tours to places such as Daytona's Bike Week.

Terry Frober, Detroit co-owner of the local franchise, expects half the business to be international. Daily rates range from $75 for a Honda 750 Shadow to $130 for a Harley Fat Boy.
