2006 primaries

With few glitches other than lightning striking a Pasco County polling place, low numbers of voters made their choices in the primary.

Citrus County

COUNTY COMMISSION: Republican John Thrumston and Democrat Bernie Leven won their nominations and will face Steve Hasel, who has no party affiliation in the general election for the District 4 seat.

SCHOOL BOARD: Two board members, Pat Deutschman and Linda Powers, won re-election, and a third, Lou Miele, faces an opponent in the general election. Miele led his opponents, but not by enough. "How many more dollars? How many more sleepless nights?" Miele said. He faces Rock Crusher Elementary School teacher Paul Earnheart in November.

Hernando County

SCHOOL BOARD: Two races appeared headed to a runoff. Two-term incumbent Robert Wiggins was trailing Richard McDermott and John Sweeney in the District 1 race, and three-term incumbent John Druzbick held a slight lead over teacher Dianne Bonfield in District 3.

COUNTY COMMISSION: Veteran Nancy Robinson is seeking her fifth term; Rose Rocco is trying for her first. The women will meet in the general election for the District 2 seat. Robinson won the GOP nomination; Rocco defeated two other challengers.
