Last visitors catch a glimpse of 'Bodies'
Dissected and preserved human cadavers drew more than 20,000 last-chance visitors Labor Day weekend, capping more than a year of attendance records at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa. The final tally for "Bodies, the Exhibition": 620,507 over 13 months, ending Tuesday. Some of the final visitors went for a second glimpse at the awe-inspiring journey into the human body. Others got in for the first time before the close of the exhibit, which stirred controversy over the use of unclaimed bodies from China.
TIA has extra checked baggage in the bag
The ban on liquids, gels, pastes and wax-based products from carryon luggage has stressed the ability of many airports to handle the increase in checked bags. But not Tampa International. Although the number of checked bags increased 20 to 25 percent in the past month, TIA's new automated screening system was built with plenty of excess capacity and is handling the extra bags without problems, said airport executive director Louis Miller. In fact, Miller said, passengers are moving through security screening faster now because they are carrying aboard fewer items that must be X-rayed.
Last chance to protest higher service fees
St. Petersburg City Council members voted to raise utility rates Thursday, but it's not too late for St. Petersburg residents to register an opinion about it. The higher rates will add $2.77 more per month to the average homeowner's bill for garbage, drinking water and sewer service. That's $33.24 more per year, enough to offset any savings many homeowners might realize from a cut in the city property tax rate. Residents get one more chance to talk them out of the higher rates during a public hearing Sept. 21 at City Hall. The new rates would take effect Oct. 1 and appear in November bills.
A chart Thursday included incomplete vote totals for Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court judge elections. You can find the correct vote totals on page 3B.
