Girl, 4, is hospitalized after bulldog attack

TAMPA - A 4-year-old Lakeland girl was flown to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital late Thursday after a bulldog attacked her, causing extensive head injuries, authorities said.

Sascia Lopes was sitting on a sofa when the dog grabbed her and pulled her to the floor, Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said. The dog, named Chance, injured Sascia's left eye, ripped her left earlobe and tore off a 6-inch-by-3-inch piece of scalp, Wood said. The girl also had wounds to her back and shoulders.

The dog's owner, Ellee Knight, and the girl's mother, Gasael Lopes of Auburndale, tried to pull the animal off Sascia.

"The prognosis is positive," Wood said. "She is recovering, and all indications are positive."

No charges have been filed by the Sheriff's Office. The case was turned over to Animal Control.
