Car crash kills fleeing sex offender

WALTERBORO, S.C. - A sex offender was killed and a 14-year-old boy injured when a sport utility vehicle the man was driving slammed into a semitrailer-truck after a high speed police chase, authorities said Friday.

Adam Mauro, 27, of Pelham, N.Y., died at the scene after crossing the median and driving into oncoming traffic, said Lance Cpl. Paul Brouthers, a state Highway Patrol spokesman.

"He didn't appear to be avoiding oncoming traffic ... and we believe this was intentional," said Colleton County sheriff's Deputy Ted Stanfield.

The boy, from Stamford, Conn., was ejected from the vehicle and listed in stable condition at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The boy had been reported missing from his home.

The Lexus SUV was reported stolen from Mauro's father's house this week, authorities said.

Police in Stamford said Mauro knew the boy's father and drove off with the child Wednesday. Officials said they were investigating where Mauro met the boy, whose name was not released.

Mauro was arrested in New York in 2000 after investigators found child pornography on his home computer.

Owner of Alaska lodge dies after mower traps him

TALKEETNA, Alaska - The owner of a remote Alaska lodge died of exposure after his lawnmower overturned and trapped him, authorities said Friday.

A neighbor found the body of Andrew Piekarski, 61, on Thursday. He had last been seen on Sunday.

Investigators say Piekarski drove off a small hill, and the lawnmower landed on his legs. When Piekarski could not free himself, he unsuccessfully tried to take the lawnmower apart using a multipurpose tool, authorities said.

He died from hypothermia, officials said. Overnight low temperatures at Talkeetna, about 80 miles north of Anchorage, have been in the 30s.

Two more charged in alleged assaults on girl

MILWAUKEE - Two more people were arrested Friday in the case of an 11-year-old girl who authorities say had sex with as many as 20 people as a 16-year-old girl coached her.

Freeman Gurley, 40, the 16-year-old's uncle, and Darnell Chaney, 17, each face two charges of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

The 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy also have been charged in juvenile court with being a party to sexual assault of a child. A police spokeswoman said they were still seeking five others in the case.

According to the complaint filed in adult court against Gurley and Chaney, the 11-year-old said the 16-year-old told her she should perform various sex acts on a number of young men at the teen's house and she agreed.

When Gurley came home, the teenage girl encouraged the 11-year-old to have sex with him, police say.

Gurley admitted he had unprotected intercourse with the girl on the bed, the complaint said. Chaney admitted the girl performed oral sex on him. He also told police the 16-year-old was directing the 11-year-old girl, the complaint said.

According to court records from the juvenile court case, the 11-year-old told police that after the incident in the bedroom she went to the basement, where there were about 15 males and "began to choose who she wanted to perform oral sex on."

The 16-year-old denied encouraging her, court records said.
