Talk of the Bay

No assessments for us, please

Count the Florida Hurricane Crisis Coalition among those intensely concerned about the growing problem of affordable commercial property insurance.

The coalition, a group of businesses representing, among others, the real estate, property insurance and health care industries, sent a letter last week to Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings asking that the state's insurance reform committee, which Jennings chairs, look at solutions other than assessments on commercial insurance policies. The group wants the state to directly pay hurricane claims, so as not to cause financial harm to businesses.

Where that money would come from, and why placing the burden somewhere else wouldn't indirectly affect businesses, is not clear.
