'And the Tommy goes to...'

NEW PORT RICHEY - The musical Cinderella was the big winner in the annual Richey Suncoast Theatre Tommy Awards competition for acting and producing honors.

The awards are named for silent screen star Thomas Meighan, who once lived in New Port Richey and for whom the current home of Richey Suncoast was originally named.

The winners were announced Thursday evening, just before the opening of the current show, the musical Fiddler on the Roof, which plays through Sept. 24.

Cinderella won 10 awards in 16 categories, including a favorite director statue for director Marie Skelton.

Even so, the musical George M! won the highest award of the evening, Favorite Show of the 2005-06 Season. The musical biography of actor-writer-director George M. Cohan also won in two other categories, including a tie for favorite actor in a musical between Austin Ciliberti, who won for his portrayal of Cohan as a child, and Jonathan Tietz, who won for his portrayal of Cohan as an adult.

The big winner in the play competition was Odd Couple, which got four awards, including ones to Marc S. Sanders for Favorite Actor in a Comedy and Bob Marcela for Favorite Supporting Actor in a Comedy.

The winners are chosen by people who attend the shows, based on a point system for each show.
