New on the Food Network

By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published September 13, 2006

The Food Network is launching new series and specials this month, including Paula Deen's guide to Southern entertaining. Bob Tuschman, Food Network's vice president for programming, says viewers can expect to see more of Deen's "outrageous" personality. "We're taking the binders off and letting her be herself," he says.

The schedule of new programs:

Series

* Paula's Party premieres at 10 p.m. Sept. 29.

The hourlong show is filmed in Deen's hometown of Savannah, Ga., and is part cooking class, part fun-fest in front of an audience. Audience participation is encouraged.

* Food Network Challenge at 10 p.m. Sundays.

Each month, Food Network shows viewers the biggest food battles around the world. September challenges include:

Challenge: Birthday Cake Surprises, 9 tonight. (Already premiered.) Five cake designers have eight hours to make a cake for a client they just met. The cake that wins will be served at a birthday event the next day and the winning chef gets $10,000.

Challenge: Cereal-Scapes, 10 p.m. Sept. 24. Four competitors ranging from pastry chefs to ice carvers must re-create a city skyline using cereal as the main ingredient. New York, Las Vegas and Baltimore get the cereal treatment and the top chef wins $10,000

* Iron Chef America, new episodes at 9 and 10 p.m. Sundays.

The battles in Kitchen Stadium continue with brand new episodes pitting the American Iron Chefs against new competitors. Among this month's premiere episodes is Iron Chef America: Flay vs. Dechelis, 9 p.m. Sunday.

Specials

* The Chef and the Architect, 4 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday.

This one-hour special follows Mary Sue Milliken, one-half of the Too Hot Tamales, and her husband, architect Josh Schweitzer, as they blend their creative tastes to design their home kitchen. Add to the mix Susan Feniger, Mary Sue's business partner of 22 years who also happens to be Schweitzer's ex-wife.

Marathons

* Paula Deen Theme Night, 8 to 11 p.m. Sept. 23.

Food Network celebrates the upcoming launch of Paula's Party with a theme night devoted to the Southern cook.

Programs are repeated many times during the week. For complete schedules, go to www.foodnetwork.com.
