U.S. Embassy attacker dies of his wounds

By TIMES WIRES
Published September 14, 2006

DAMASCUS, Syria - With questions still unanswered about Tuesday's assault on the U.S. Embassy in Syria, the only attacker captured died from his wounds before police could question him, officials said Wednesday, leaving the investigation's future unclear.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said the dead man and three other gunmen killed trying to storm the embassy compound were all Syrian citizens.

There was no claim of responsibility, but suspicion immediately fell on an al-Qaida offshoot called Jund al-Sham.

The group had already criticized Israel on Aug. 23, saying its bombing campaign amounted to indiscriminate attacks.
