U.S. lags in efforts to fight childhood obesity, scientists say

WASHINGTON - One-fifth of children are likely to be obese by 2010, but efforts to turn that tide are scattershot and underfunded, a report by experts said Wednesday.

No one knows which programs really help kids slim down, said the report by the Institute of Medicine, which called for research to identify the best methods. Also, the country lacks leadership needed to speed change, said an expert panel convened by the scientific group.
