High Point Volunteer Fire Department faces review

The High Point Volunteer Fire Department will be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office after a request by Hernando County commissioners, County Attorney Garth Coller said Thursday. But the extent of the review has yet to be determined, said State Attorney Brad King. King's staff will meet with county officials next week. The volunteer department has been under scrutiny for nearly a year amid concerns that the aging force of retirees doesn't have the training or ability to adequately fight fires. The matter was scheduled for a hearing before the commission Sept. 26, but the issue came to a head this week after a flurry of allegations by a former department member. King said he will review the county's information to see if there is any potential for charges of criminal misconduct. A grand jury could initiate a broader review of the department, a move that King said would be both costly and unusual.
