In more ways than one, Shane Smith became a winner. After troubling times and early disinterest in other sports, Smith joined a Saturday starter league at Tarpon Lanes just to pick up the game. After raising his average, and interest in bowling, he felt compelled to essay his gratitude to the sport as bowling enthusiasts from across the country participated in the National Bowling Week art, photography and essay contests. The winners earned scholarships and cash prizes. The Palm Harbor teen won a $1,000 scholarship from the USBC and the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America in celebration of National Bowling Week, which began Aug. 26 and concluded Sept. 1. The National Bowling Essay Contest encouraged writers to share their best bowling moments or describe how bowling has positively impacted their lives. Smith placed second in the youth essay division. Greg Lindberg, also from Palm Harbor, received a $100 prize in the adult division for his essay after placing 10th. In Smith's case, he found a sport he enjoyed, and a newfound relationship with his father, who is his mentor, best friend and biggest fan. "He has been there for me and it has made all the difference in the world," Shane wrote in his essay, according to bowl.com. PCHSL: Palm Harbor University (40-2) has won all but two of the 42 points available after Week 2 of the Pinellas County High School League, leading the girls scratch division in front of Tarpon Springs (37-5) and Northeast (36-6). Ashly Galante again led strong scores from the girls with a 275/699 for Tarpon, bettering even the boys. Northeast's Sarah Shouppe (225/610) and Kristen Chassereau (220/580) helped keep the Vikings up front. Handicapped, Boca Ciega (32-10) leads over Countryside (29-13) and St. Petersburg (28-14). Busting averages, Elizabeth Swan of Largo (154 average) rolled a 232 game finishing, with a 536 series and Lakewood's Niki Kyro (116 average) had a 209 game. The Bordner brothers Trevor and Tyler have split up the boys division. Trevor finished with a boys-high 668, featuring a 254 game for St. Petersburg (35-7 and 33-9), which is second in both the scratch and handicapped scores behind Pinellas Park. Tyler led the Patriots last week, rolling rolled a 221/609. Palm Harbor University (34-8) is third in scratch and Northeast, led by Ryan Rutan's 258/622, is third in handicapped scores (29-13). Other good scores from the boys came from Countryside's Matt Florio (268/646) and Jon Brady (236/672), Osceola's Greg Krug (248/645), and East Lake's Jay Zuendorfer (236/603). In junior varsity play, all handicapped, Clearwater No. 2 holds a slight lead over Seminole and Countryside.
