PITTSBURGH - The Panthers had so much success early against Michigan State that when the Spartans finally stopped them on their first possession of the second quarter, they never recovered.
Pitt, which led 10-0, watched the Spartans score 38 straight Saturday as Michigan State won 38-23.
Quarterback Tyler Palko said the key moment came in the second quarter when Pitt had to punt for the first time after a 3-and-out following Pitt's recovery of an onside kick.
"There was a mind-set of, 'Uh oh, what happens now?' " Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt said.
In the second half, Spartans quarterback Drew Stanton led drives of 75, 64, 83 and 99 yards. Stanton also ran for 105 yards and a score.
Wake Forest 24, UConn 13: Defensive end Jeremy Thompson took a first-quarter interception 86 yards for a touchdown in East Hartford, Conn., to help the Demon Deacons to their first 3-0 start since 1987. Connecticut held a 324-209 advantage in yards but was hurt by misses on an extra point and a 28-yard field goal. Terry Caulley ran for 81 yards for the Huskies, becoming the school's career leading rusher. He passed Wilbur Gilliard, who ran for 2,624 yards in the early 1990s.
Rutgers 24, Ohio 7: Ray Rice ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns for the host Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, N.J., helping Rutgers to its first 3-0 start since 1981 despite an error-plagued offense. Ohio, which sought its first 3-0 start since 1976, picked off Mike Teel three times.
