ZEPHYRHILLS - A CSX train Saturday night struck and killed a man lying on the railroad tracks between South and Alston avenues, police said.

Police do not know why the man was lying on the tracks or why he did not get up when the train was approaching just before 11 p.m., said Sgt. Randy Grimm.

"They saw him, but they weren't able to stop," Grimm said.

The man's name was withheld pending notification of his family, he said.

Train operators called 911. Fire and rescue workers pronounced the man dead when they arrived.
