First Generation scholars to be honored

By Times Staff
Published September 20, 2006

A group of students will make history at the University of South Florida today as they mingle with USF's president, the chancellor of the state university system and other education leaders.

The 109 students are the first at USF to receive the state's new First Generation Scholarships, awarded to low-income, full-time students who are the first in their families to attend college. Lawmakers set aside $6.5-million and universities are raising matching dollars. The state will match up to $967,000 in private donations to USF.
